Strengthening U.S.-Japan Maritime Partnership: JMSDF Information Warfare Commander Visits NWDC

Vice Adm. Takeshi Yoshioka, Commander, Information Warfare Command, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), visited Navy Warfare Development Center (NWDC) in Norfolk, Virginia, Aug. 24, 2026, strengthening cooperation and information-sharing between the United States and Japan.
Vice Adm. Yoshioka was welcomed by Mr. Michael Durkin, Director, NWDC. The engagement provided an opportunity for senior leaders from both nations to exchange perspectives on naval warfare and discuss opportunities to further strengthen interoperability and collaboration in addressing shared maritime challenges.
During the visit, Vice Adm. Yoshioka received briefs highlighting NWDC’s missions within Doctrine, Concepts, Lessons Learned, Wargaming, and Fleet Experimentation to identify opportunities for the US Navy and JMSDF to support mutual objectives. The discussions underscored the importance of strong relationships between allied forces and the need to strengthen their ability to operate together across an increasingly complex maritime environment.
Vice Adm. Yoshioka also toured NWDC’s Navy Center for Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NCAMS), gaining insight into the center’s capabilities and its efforts to support fleet readiness through training and live virtual constructive exercises.
The visit highlighted the enduring strength of the U.S.-Japan maritime partnership and the importance of continued engagement between the two navies.
