Norfolk, Va. --
Mr. Erich Röetz, a retired U.S. Navy Commander and current leader at Navy Warfare Development Center (NWDC), has been appointed as the Council Service Territory 15 Commissioner for Scouting America. This role places him at the helm of one of the organization’s 14 national administrative regions, which encompass 19 local councils across the Mid-Atlantic region.
In his new capacity, Röetz will oversee the delivery of Scouting programs to tens of thousands of youth and adult volunteers, ensuring that local councils receive the guidance and support needed to thrive. His responsibilities will include fostering unit service, promoting volunteer engagement, and supporting the strategic goals of Scouting America.
Röetz brings a wealth of experience to the role. Prior to his appointment, he served as the Council Commissioner for the Tidewater Council in Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina. In that capacity, he led unit service efforts for over 5,000 youth and 2,400 adult volunteers. His extensive Scouting background includes roles as Scoutmaster, Wood Badge staff, National Youth Leadership Training staff, and Order of the Arrow Lodge Advisor. He has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Silver Beaver and District Award of Merit.
A graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a degree in systems engineering, Röetz had a distinguished 28-year Navy career. His service included roles as Safety Officer, Chief Evaluation Pilot, Lead Instructor Pilot, and Director of Air Operations. Following his retirement, he continued to contribute to military readiness as a fleet training officer with Tactical Training Group Atlantic and, most recently, within the Maritime Operations Center Training and Exercise Team at NWDC, training and mentoring fleet operators.
Röetz’s appointment reflects Scouting America’s commitment to strong leadership and effective unit service. As Council Service Territory 15 Commissioner, he is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Scouting in the region.
